Netflix K-Drama Bon Appétit Your Majesty faces backlash over Hanja banner blunder

Netflix’s new historical K-drama Bon Appétit Your Majesty has only just premiered with two episodes, yet it’s already making waves — not just for its stunning visuals, but also due to a noticeable production mistake. In a pivotal scene, a banner featuring the phrase Tae Pyeong Seong Dae (太平聖代), meaning “a great and prosperous era,” was shown — but keen-eyed fans quickly spotted the final character was incorrect.

Korean Drama on Netflix faces backlash

Netflix’s latest historical K-drama Bon Appétit Your Majesty has only just begun its run, with just two episodes out, but it’s already making headlines. While the show has been praised for its striking visuals and intriguing concept, it has also become the centre of an unusual controversy after a small but glaring production error caught the eyes of sharp viewers.

In one of the key scenes, a large banner was displayed with the phrase Tae Pyeong Seong Dae (太平聖代), traditionally used to describe “a great and prosperous era.” But fans quickly spotted a problem: the final character was wrong.

Instead of “代” (dae), which refers to an era or period, the banner read “大” (dae), which simply means “big” or “large.” For a historical drama, where every detail is expected to be carefully researched, the error seemed jarring and — as many called it — “absurd.”

Once the slip was noticed, it spread like wildfire on social media and Korean community forums. Some fans were blunt in their criticism.

One wrote: “Hey, you said you were making a historical drama, but the production team and director are illiterate and can’t even write ‘tae pyeong seong dae’ in Hanja correctly.”

Others decided to poke fun at the mistake, with one sarcastically commenting: “Can I get a large ‘tae pyeong seong dae’ please?”

The error quickly became a trending topic, overshadowing much of the initial buzz surrounding the show’s release.

While it’s not unusual for dramas to face occasional criticism for historical inaccuracies, this mistake struck viewers as something very basic that should have been easily avoided. On Korean forums like theqoo, many posts slammed the production team for overlooking a detail so central to the authenticity of the story.

Despite the backlash, Bon Appétit Your Majesty continues to attract strong viewership thanks to Netflix’s reach and the popularity of K-dramas worldwide.

Yet the incident has sparked a larger conversation — if even one misplaced character can spark such a reaction, it’s a reminder of just how closely audiences are watching, especially when it comes to historical storytelling.
