Nayanthara, the celebrated South Indian actress, recently addressed the 'Lady Superstar' tag often associated with her in an interview. She discussed the challenges women face in the film industry and shared her thoughts on the label, dismissing it as "just another controversy."
In a recent interview, Nayanthara spoke about the Lady Superstar tag doesn’t hold much significance for her, as she focuses more on her craft and the roles she takes on rather than labels.
having a conversation with Hollywood Reporter, Nayanthara said that the moniker comes with responsibilities. She stated, "The kind of backlash that I have had just for this title is unbelievable. And for the past five to six years, I think I have been telling and literally begging all my producers, directors of all the films not to put that title card. Because I am so scared. My career is not defined by the title or the tag, or I am not trying to snatch away someone's title. It's not about that. It really doesn't mean anything to me. But, it means a bit to me, maybe because it's the love and respect that people have for me."
She went on and said, "It's not something that I thought about one night, created it and the next day I wanted people to call me this. This is not how it happens at all. We live in such a smart world. You cannot fool the audience, and you can't do anything on your own. It just has to happen."
"I might not be the best of the actors, performers or dancers, but, I am here. And, it might be because of my hard work or maybe because there's something that people liked in me or loved in me. I think all these titles really don't matter, but it's really unfair to put me in a spot every time people put that tag and I say "Oh my God! Can you please not use that?"" Nayanthara continued.
In the same conversation, Nayanthara also touched on the growing prominence of female artists in the industry, saying, "Because I know there is a problem when people see a successful woman. There is a sort of envy or there's something that happens inside people when they see a woman much more successful than all the men. And it's not easy to survive and to be the lead for 20 years. "

She added, "I remember directors telling me to make use of the first five years and that's it. "The first five years is your shelf life. It is the shelf life for any heroine, be it the biggest of heroines. If you're lucky you will get one more year." So, this is how I have been counting for so many years (laughs)."
On the work front, Nayanthara was recently seen in the blockbuster Bollywood film Jawan, directed by Atlee, alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Deepika Padukone. Additionally, her documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, was released on Netflix on her birthday, receiving widespread praise from both critics and fans for its intimate portrayal of her life and career.
