Mukesh Khanna, best remembered for his iconic roles in Shaktimaan and Mahabharat, has once again sparked debate with his outspoken remarks. Known for his strong views on cinema and television, the veteran actor has now targeted Ektaa Kapoor’s decision to bring back the popular daily soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Khanna did not mince words as he criticized the show’s portrayal of women and questioned the values being promoted.
In a conversation with Filmygyan, Mukesh Khanna expressed his disappointment over how Indian television has been shaping societal perceptions. He strongly objected to the way women are often presented in such shows, remarking, “Aapka kya attitude hai? Aapko fikr nahi hai ki aap morals ki esi-tesi kar rahe ho, ghar ke system ki esi-tesi kar rahe ho. Aap Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi jaise shows late ho jismein 6 auratein jhumka-bindi lagakar bolti hain, ‘Dekhti hoon tumhari shaadi kaise hoti hai.’”
(Translation: What kind of attitude is this? Aren’t you worried about the way you are presenting the morals and making the family system a joke? You are bringing a show like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi wherein women wear bindis and lots of jewellery and say, “Let’s see how you will get married.”)

The actor further elaborated on his concerns, claiming that such portrayals give a distorted image of Indian women. “All women are shown as selfish. In our country, women are not like that, and yet it became so popular,” Khanna said, questioning why audiences accepted such regressive content. According to him, television has a responsibility to guide society, but instead, shows like these have turned into platforms that glorify family conflicts.
This is not the first time Mukesh Khanna has stirred conversation with his opinions. Recently, he voiced disapproval of Ranbir Kapoor’s casting in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. He expressed doubts about whether the Animal actor could convincingly portray Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram, citing Kapoor’s previous screen image as a mismatch for the revered role.
Meanwhile, the reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is generating buzz as it marks Smriti Irani’s comeback to television after years of political engagement. The original series, which starred Smriti Irani as Tulsi Virani and Amar Upadhyay as Mihir Virani, revolved around the Virani family of Shantiniketan and became a cultural phenomenon during its original run. Ektaa Kapoor is now banking on nostalgia to revive the show, but Mukesh Khanna’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate around the ethics and messaging of Indian television dramas.
