Shahid Rafi, son of the legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi, has revealed plans for a biopic on his father, with an official announcement expected next month. As the world prepares to celebrate Rafi's birth centenary on December 24, 2024, the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) honored his legacy this week.
Known as one of Hindi cinema's greatest voices, Rafi lent his talent to over 1,000 Indian and international film songs. Shahid shared that he is currently in discussions with director Umesh Shukla, acclaimed for OMG – Oh My God! and 102 Not Out, to helm the project.
Speaking about the biopic, Shahid said, "An announcement will be made in December. I am making a biopic on Rafi sahab. We are planning… It is going to be the life story of Rafi sahab. Songs will also be part of the biopic. We have made a contract with Umesh Shukla, director of 'OMG – Oh My God!' and '102 Not Out'. It will be a full-fledged feature film."
Shahid Rafi shared the news during a session titled Aasmaan Se Aaya Farishta – Mohammed Rafi: The King of Melody. The event also featured veteran actor Sharmila Tagore, renowned singers Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal, along with celebrated filmmaker Subhash Ghai.
Born on December 24, 1924, Mohammed Rafi remains one of India's most legendary and versatile singers. His remarkable repertoire spanned genres, including lively dance tracks, patriotic anthems, soulful ballads, romantic melodies, qawwalis, ghazals, bhajans, and classical compositions.
Some of Mohammed Rafi's timeless hits include Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar, Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya, Aaja Aaja, Kaun Hai Jo Sapnon Mein Aaya, Parda Hai Parda, Gulabi Aankhein, Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya, and Sukh Ke Sab Saathi, among many others.
Over his illustrious career, Rafi earned six Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award. In 1967, his extraordinary contributions to Indian music were recognized with the Padma Shri by the Government of India. He left an enduring legacy upon his passing on July 31, 1980.
