Kapil Sharma recalls slipping into depression after bankruptcy; says 'Mera dimaag kharab hogaya'

Kapil Sharma stands as India’s richest television star today with an estimated net worth of Rs 300 crore, surpassing even top-earning actors like Rupali Ganguly. Known for his comedic brilliance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Kapil's journey, however, has not been an easy one, marked by struggles with bankruptcy and mental health challenges.

He recently appeared on Feel It In Your Soul podcast, and opened up about his rollercoaster journey from arriving in Mumbai with just Rs 1200 to becoming a household name. He recounted how, in pursuit of expanding his career, he decided to produce two films. This ambitious move, however, resulted in substantial financial losses, leaving his bank account nearly empty and pushing him into a period of depression.

Discussing this tough chapter, Kapil candidly shared, “Mera dimaag kharab hogaya. Maine do filmein bana di.” (I lost my mind and made two films). Speaking in Punjabi, Kapil explained his miscalculation, saying, “I had a lot of money and thought that becoming a producer was easy. But producing requires a different mindset and training.” He admitted that his lack of experience led to massive financial losses ṭhaṭ emptied his bank account. The loss, coupled with other personal struggles, took a toll on his mental health, leading him into a depressive phase.

During this low point, his wife, Ginni Chatrath, played an instrumental role in supporting him. Kapil credits Ginni with helping him through his emotional struggles and standing by him despite the financial difficulties. Her unwavering support helped Kapil get back on his feet and resume his career with renewed determination.

Today, Kapil has transformed his setbacks into success. His latest venture is The Great Indian Kapil Show latest season that features fan favourites like Archana Puran Singh, Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, and Rajiv Thakur.
