Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the acclaimed American actor known for his roles in Inception and 500 Days of Summer, recently expressed his admiration for Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi.
While attending the Indian Film Project (IFP) in Mumbai, Joseph shared that he was "completely captivated" by the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed period drama. He even compared the film to a Martin Scorsese movie, noting its depth and cinematic brilliance.
During a conversation with Indian actor Rajkummar Rao, Joseph spoke highly of Gangubai Kathiawadi, praising Alia Bhatt’s performance and the film’s unique storytelling. "I absolutely loved watching Alia Bhatt's period drama, Gangubai Kathiawadi. It was a truly unique and beautiful film, unlike anything I've seen before. The heavy, distinguished drama felt almost like a Scorsese film at times, but then there were these gorgeous musical numbers that were so sincere and well-crafted." he said.
His experience watching the film piqued his interest in Indian cinema and left him eager to explore it further.
Joseph went on to express his desire to make a film in India. He shared his excitement about Indian culture and the deep passion for films he encountered during his visit. "I found myself completely captivated by the film. It made me eager to learn more about Indian cinema, which is why I wanted to visit India. I'm loving the culture here and the genuine passion for movies and artists. I would love to come back to India and make a film here," he added.
Gangubai Kathiawadi, based on the life of a brothel madam in Mumbai, garnered widespread acclaim, with Alia Bhatt winning her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her powerful portrayal.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a versatile actor, filmmaker, and entrepreneur, has won two Primetime Emmy Awards and is known for his performances in films such as Looper, Snowden, Don Jon, and 500 Days of Summer.
