Veteran actress and politician Jaya Bachchan once again found herself in a war of words with the paparazzi—this time at a prayer meet. On June 4, during the final rites ceremony of late filmmaker Rono Mukherjee in Mumbai, Jaya Bachchan’s sharp comments towards photographers sparked an online debate.
As she exited the venue alongside her daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Jaya, visibly disturbed by the media presence, sarcastically told the paps, “Chaliye… aap log bhi aaiye sath me… aa jaiye. Bakwas sab.” Her irritation didn’t stop there. When a cameraman tried to record her near the car, she snapped again, saying, “Aao… aap gaadi mein aa jao (Come and sit with us in the car).”
This fiery exchange quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from social media users. While some defended her stance, arguing that grief-stricken moments like these demand privacy, many others criticized her attitude, calling her behavior repetitive and rude.
One user wrote, “Aise attitude vale ko kyu click karr rhe ho aap log jo aapki bhaav he nahi daal rhe". Others were far less forgiving. Comments like “inka ab jyada ho rha hai ab ye”, “media kyu cover karti hai isse”, and “khud kitni gandi hai” flooded the comment sections of viral reels and posts featuring the incident.
The prayer meet itself was a solemn occasion attended by several industry stalwarts and close family members. Names like Kajol, Ayan Mukerji, Tanishaa Mukerji, Amit Kumar, and Salim Khan were among those who came to pay their respects to the late filmmaker, who passed away due to cardiac arrest on May 28.
Rono Mukherjee, known for films like Haiwan (1977) and Tu Hi Meri Zindagi (1965), was part of a renowned film family. His passing marks yet another emotional moment for the Mukherjee family, just months after losing Deb Mukherjee.
As debates rage on, Jaya Bachchan’s relationship with the media remains as complex as ever. While many see her outbursts as justified in moments of grief, others argue it’s time for the media to reconsider giving her attention at all.
