In an interview with Humans of Cinema, Anurag Kashyap was asked about his reasons for not collaborating with the Bollywood icon. He candidly replied that although he aspires to work with Shah Rukh Khan and holds him in high regard, the filmmaker is "very scared of fans."
"My favourite Shah Rukh Khan film is Chak De India. Also, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. In his beginning stage, SRK worked with everybody. But it is impossible to make a film with Shah Rukh Khan now. I aspired it once and I like him a lot, but I am very scared of fans now," said Kashyap.
He emphasized that the pressures and expectations from fans make it daunting to cater to their demands and deliver the type of films they want repeatedly.
Anurag Kashyap's movie 'Bombay Velvet,' which featured prominent Bollywood figures like Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar, and Anushka Sharma, did not perform well at the box office.
Reflecting on this, Kashyap admitted that the fear of facing repercussions and the consequences of not meeting fans' expectations is intimidating. "Hence I am scared because I will make the film I want to and not just cater to the fans. The repercussions or consequences of what happens then can cost you a lot," he explained.
He also acknowledged that his creative vision might not always align with the larger-than-life aura of Shah Rukh Khan. "So it’s not in my capacity to cater to SRK’s aura or enigma. If his film Fan would have worked, I could have said that I too have the courage to work with him," he added.
Furthermore, Kashyap shared insights into his approach to filmmaking, expressing a desire to maintain his artistic integrity rather than succumbing to the pressures of commercial success. He recounted his experience with the film 'Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat,' which he described as the biggest disaster of his career.
Despite the film's failure and the financial loss he incurred, Kashyap felt a sense of satisfaction for staying true to his creative instincts. "The biggest disaster of my life is Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat, I lost all my money also. Everybody thought it was foolhardy to do that, but at least I got to do my thing. That failure I can own. I take total ownership of that. It is more satisfying because I have no regrets," he stated.
Anurag Kashyap's decision to refrain from working with Shah Rukh Khan underscores the significant influence of fan expectations on the creative processes within Bollywood.
