Director Subhash Ghai recently opened up about his experience working with Shah Rukh Khan in the 1997 film 'Pardes'. In a new interview, Ghai hinted at the disagreements that arose between them during the making of the film. Shah Rukh Khan starred opposite Mahima Chaudhry in 'Pardes', a film that also featured Amrish Puri. Despite the success of the movie, Ghai and Shah Rukh have not collaborated on any projects since then.
In the trailer for Arbaaz Khan’s talk show, The Invincibles Series Season 2, Ghai brought up his working relationship with Shah Rukh Khan. He said, "Jaise maine Pardes mein Shah Rukh Khan ke saath kaam kiya. Uske aur mere beech manmutaav chalta rehta tha, tu-tu main-main chalti rehti thi" (I worked with Shah Rukh in 'Pardes'. We had our share of disagreements). This statement suggests that the two had frequent conflicts on set, affecting their professional relationship.

'Pardes' completed 25 years in 2022, and during that time, Ghai reflected on the challenges Shah Rukh faced while filming. Speaking with ANI, Ghai mentioned that the biggest challenge for Shah Rukh was to keep his romantic aura aside. He said, "I kept reminding him (Shah Rukh Khan) in every scene and song that he has to avoid his compelling, romantic side to justify Arjun’s character. It was challenging for him but he nailed it!"
Besides discussing Shah Rukh Khan, Subhash Ghai also spoke about his experiences working with other prominent actors like Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. Ghai commented on the different types of actors he has worked with, categorizing Jackie Shroff as a "bad actor" and Anil Kapoor as one of the "good actors." He said, "There are five types of actors. One is a non-actor and there is one called bad actor. Bad actor was Jackie Shroff, actor is Anil Kapoor."
Ghai's collaborations with Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor have been significant in his career. He worked with Jackie Shroff in 'Hero' (1983), which marked Shroff's acting debut, and with Anil Kapoor in 'Meri Jung' (1985). He paired them together in 'Karma' (1986) and 'Ram Lakhan' (1989), both of which were massive hits. Ghai also worked with Jackie again in 'Khal Nayak' (1993) and with Anil in 'Taal' (1999).

'Pardes' remains one of the notable films in both Subhash Ghai and Shah Rukh Khan's careers. The movie, which deals with the clash of Indian and Western cultures, was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Shah Rukh Khan's portrayal of Arjun was praised for its depth and sincerity, despite the challenges he faced in moving away from his romantic hero image.
