Tabu is one of Bollywood's most talented and respected actresses, known for her powerful performances in both mainstream and independent films. She has received numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards and the prestigious Padma Shri for her contributions to Indian cinema. Some of her most notable films include "Maachis," "Chandni Bar," "Virasat," "Hu Tu Tu," "Astitva," "Cheeni Kum," "Drishyam," and "Andhadhun."
Interestingly, Tabu never wanted to be an actress. Growing up in a Hyderabadi Muslim family, she was more focused on her studies. It was the legendary actor Dev Anand who persuaded her to enter the film industry. Her first acting role came in the movie "Hum Naujawan" in 1985 when she was just a teenager. However, she got her big break opposite Ajay Devgn in the 1994 film "Vijaypath."
A Complicated Family Background
Tabu's childhood was shaped by her parents' divorce when she was only three years old. Following the separation, her mother took on the responsibility of raising Tabu and her sister. Tabu spent much of her childhood living with her grandparents in Hyderabad. In an interview with Simmi Garewal, she shared, "I had a great childhood... My mum was a teacher, and so I ended up spending more time with her mother, and my grandmother would pray and read books. I was very timid, I did not have a voice."
Due to her father's absence and the emotional distance, Tabu has chosen not to take his surname, Hashmi. She has mentioned, “I have no memories with him; I am not curious about him.” This sentiment highlights the impact of her family dynamics on her life and career.

Love Life and Relationships
Throughout her life, Tabu has experienced love, heartbreak, and a few significant relationships. She fell in love three times and was engaged once, but she never got married.
Her first notable relationship was with actor Sanjay Kapoor, whom she met while filming "Prem." Their romance was a topic of discussion in the media, and they later confirmed their relationship in interviews. However, they eventually went their separate ways.
Tabu then had a serious relationship with director-producer Sajid Nadiadwala. They became engaged while working on the film "Jeet." However, Sajid struggled with the memories of his late wife, Divya Bharti, which hindered his ability to fully commit to Tabu. This emotional barrier led to the end of their relationship before they could take the next step.
Later, Tabu reportedly dated Telugu superstar Akkineni Nagarjuna. According to reports, their relationship lasted about ten years, and they considered marriage. However, Nagarjuna was unwilling to divorce his wife, Amala, which ultimately led to the end of their relationship as well.
A Controversial Incident with Jackie Shroff
In 1986, during the filming of "Diljala" in Mauritius, a controversial incident occurred involving Tabu and actor Jackie Shroff. At a party hosted by Danny Denzongpa, Jackie allegedly tried to kiss Tabu while he was intoxicated. Danny intervened, and the next morning, Tabu’s sister, Farah Naaz, spoke publicly about the incident, accusing Jackie of attempting to assault Tabu. Although Farah later clarified that it was a misunderstanding, Tabu chose not to work with Jackie Shroff in the future.
The Ajay Devgn Connection
One of the most interesting aspects of Tabu's life is her long-standing friendship with Ajay Devgn. They have known each other for over 25 years, having grown up as neighbours. Tabu humorously remarked in an interview, “Ajay and I have known each other for 25 years. He was my neighbour and a close friend of my cousin, Sameer Arya. When I was young, Ajay and Sameer kept a close watch on me, even scaring off any boys who tried to talk to me. If I’m single today, it’s only because of Ajay Devgn.”
This playful comment highlights the protective nature of their friendship and adds a lighthearted touch to her otherwise complex love life.
Tabu's journey in the film industry has been marked by both incredible success and personal challenges.
With her remarkable talent and dedication, she has become an iconic figure in Indian cinema. Despite her complicated relationships and family background, Tabu continues to shine, captivating audiences with her performances and staying true to herself. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, showing that success can come from overcoming personal struggles and embracing one’s true self.
