Deepika, who introduced the globally acclaimed RRR song Naatu Naatu at the Oscars, reminisced about the historic moment when the song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023. Reflecting on the moment, she shared, “I remember being in the audience and when they announced RRR, I got emotional. Outside of being an Indian I had really nothing to do with that movie but that was a huge, huge moment. That felt very, very personal.”

She emphasized that India’s film industry has long been producing world-class cinema, yet international recognition has often eluded it. “Many, many deserving movies I feel like has got snubbed. Whether it’s movies, whether it’s talent,” she remarked, indicating that the global accolades have not matched the quality and dedication shown by Indian artists over the years.

Despite the overall sentiment of disappointment with the Oscars’ history regarding Indian cinema, Deepika also mentioned a moment from this year’s Oscars that made her happy. She noted, “There was one win at this year’s Oscars which made me very happy. That was the Oscar for Best Actor for actor Adrien Brody, who won for The Brutalist.”

Through her statements, Deepika not only voiced the collective frustration of the Indian film fraternity but also highlighted the significance of milestones like RRR’s win, which serve as reminders of the global potential and emotional power of Indian cinema.
