The latest chapter in the difficult and increasingly public separation between Celina Jaitly and her estranged husband, Austrian hotelier Peter Haag, unfolded on Friday as the two stood before a metropolitan magistrate’s court in Andheri.
It was the pair’s first appearance since Celina Jaitly filed a domestic violence case in November, and the court has now asked both sides to submit detailed income affidavits by 27 January.
Peter Haag has also been instructed to file his formal reply to her complaint, signalling the start of what is likely to be a long and emotionally taxing legal process.
According to Hindustan Times, Celina Jaitly, represented by Karanjawala & Company, has levelled serious accusations of physical, verbal and emotional abuse over the course of their 15-year marriage.
The couple, who married in Mumbai in 2010, moved frequently—between Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore and Austria—while adjusting to Peter Haag’s professional commitments abroad. In her petition, Celina Jaitly is seeking ₹100 crore in compensation as well as ₹10 lakh per month for maintenance.
A central theme of Celina Jaitly’s case is her claim that she was steadily stripped of independence. In her petition, she states that she was “robbed of her financial independence and dignity”, describing years of what she alleges was coercive control.
She says Peter Haag restricted her work opportunities, blocked her access to her own earnings and left her financially dependent on him. The complaint paints a troubling picture of him as a “self-absorbed individual” who allegedly showed “no empathy” for her or their children.
The petition goes further, accusing Peter Haag of misusing her funds by withdrawing money from her bank accounts and using her debit and credit cards under the guise of managing expenses.
A 2019 gift deed pertaining to her Mumbai apartment, which she says she signed while emotionally vulnerable, is one of the most controversial issues. Celina Jaitly claims that Peter Haag later made about Rs 1.26 crore by renting out the apartment without telling her.
She has also stated that he sold a jointly bought property in Vienna without her knowledge and that her situation worsened after they moved to a small Austrian village.
According to her petition, she eventually left Austria with help from a neighbour after locating documents that had allegedly been kept from her.
Complicating matters further, divorce proceedings are already underway in Austria. Reports suggest that Peter Haag has blamed Celina Jaitly for the marriage breakdown.
Her legal team has shared that she was recently granted an hour of daily telephone contact with their children, following a period in which she claims Peter Haag cut off all communication.
In her domestic violence complaint in Mumbai, she asserts that she has been barred from speaking to the children since she began legal action in India.
The Mumbai court has asked for clarity on both parties’ financial standings before considering interim relief. With Peter Haag now required to submit his reply and income details, the case will resume on 27 January, when the court will examine the filings and address Celina Jaitly’s interim applications.
