BTS' RM reacts as he makes history at AMAs 2025; hints at wrapping up military duty

BTS RM on getting Favourite K-pop Artist trophy

At the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), BTS leader Kim Namjoon, better known by his stage name RM, made history by taking home the Favourite K-pop Artist trophy.

With this accomplishment, he becomes the first K-pop artist to win the award both individually and in a group.

Due to his continued military duty in South Korea, RM was unable to attend the event in person, but he expressed his sincere gratitude on social media for the victory.

Taking to Instagram Stories, Namjoon reposted BTS’s official announcement of his win, which read, “Thank you for your love and support, #BTSARMY (purple heart emoji).”

In response, RM wrote, “Thank you @amaz #ARMY (kissing face emoji),” celebrating the moment with fans worldwide. He also reshared a Yonhap News article about BTS’s upcoming military discharges, commenting, “It will be soon, seriously, soon,” signalling his excitement to return to music and connect with fans again.

This year, the AMAs debuted the Favourite K-pop Artist category, and Namjoon faced off against well-known artists like Stray Kids, Jimin from BTS, ATEEZ, and Rosé from BLACKPINK. His triumph, which was determined by fan votes, is particularly noteworthy because it is his first Western ceremony solo award.

Fans, known as ARMY, were quick to flood platforms like Reddit with emotional reactions. One user wrote, “Yaaaaayyyy!!! Congratulations RM! BTS Leader win the first AMA Kpop award. Let’s go!!! Plus RPWP was a masterpiece!” Another fan shared, “OMG, I’m so happy for him. I’m glad army was able to secure that win for him since he won’t be nominated in Korea because his album is too genre-bending.”

Many echoed the sentiment that this fan-voted award was particularly meaningful. “The fact that he won a fan-voted award makes me so so happy! Most (all?) of his wins for RPWP have been critic choices and selected ones (which is incredible and amazing!),” said one comment.

Last year, RM's second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, was widely praised by critics. Fans are excitedly awaiting the group's reunion and RM's next phase as a solo artist, as his discharge is scheduled for June along with that of Suga, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook.
