In addition to being a cinematic icon, veteran Bollywood star Dharmendra was a loving and protective father. He passed away on Monday at the age of 89.
He was determined to protect his kids from the harsh and frequently manufactured world of the film industry, despite his commanding presence on the silver screen.
However, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, and Esha Deol, three of his children, followed in his footsteps and rose to prominence as prominent actors in Hindi cinema.
Dharmendra was reportedly upset when Esha made her Bollywood debut, reflecting his desire to keep his family grounded.
Earlier this year, Bobby Deol shared memories of his father’s careful guidance in an interview with Instant Bollywood.
He recalled, “Whenever there was a star kid’s birthday, papa would never let us go. I tell him now that you shouldn’t have done that. But at that time, I felt it was a big deal. But then it became a habit and I didn’t think too much of it. Papa never wanted us to mingle with the film industry because film industry bahut banawati hai. Toh wo chahte the ki humey banawatipan se door rakhe.”
Bobby also spoke about the simplicity of their home life, saying, “We never had an environment like the film industry. We had a simple household. We’d never have parties at home or talk about films. We lived like normal people. We were never influenced by the film industry. I just witnessed that my father got a lot of love. Whether I’d go on a set or see people crowd up outside home, I’d always be surprised by that phenomenon. Why is my father getting so much love?”
Sunny, Bobby, Ajeeta, and Vijeta were his four children with his first wife, Prakash Kaur, whom he wed in 1954.
He wed Bollywood star Hema Malini in 1980, and the two of them had two daughters, Ahana and Esha. Despite his notoriety and success in movies, Dharmendra made an effort to instill in his kids a respect for life outside of the spotlight, humility, and simplicity.
