Aamir Khan, who is renowned for his impactful performances and careful script selections, has delighted fans by announcing the eagerly anticipated Sarfarosh sequel.
The 1999 action movie, in which Khan played the honourable and unyielding Mumbai police officer ACP Ajay Singh Rathod, is still remembered for its stirring plot and sense of patriotism.
Sarfarosh, which was directed by John Matthew Matthan and starred Sonali Bendre as the lead, was a critical and financial success.
Aamir has now formally declared that Sarfarosh 2 is in development, more than 20 years later. The actor discussed the impending sequel and the responsibility that comes with making sequels to classics while speaking at the Bollywood Hungama Style Icons Summit.
“Once you made a great film, you don’t want to mess with them. Aap uska sequel tab karenge jab aapko aisa lage ki deserve to be. Vo feeling that you would like to do for any of the film. Like Andaaz Apna Apna, Sarfarosh. Sarfarosh 2 pe abhi kaam chal raha hai. Unless the script comes out really well, it is really unfair to go ahead,” he stated.
Aamir also made headlines recently when he candidly spoke about the emotional toll after Laal Singh Chaddha’s underwhelming box office performance. He revealed that he had initially opted out of Sitaare Zameen Par, the next film he was supposed to act in, because he felt emotionally exhausted and needed a break. “I told Prasanna (director) that I was depressed and hence, I needed a break. Prasanna got a heart attack (laughs) on hearing that,” he recounted.

For the Hindi and Tamil versions, respectively, Farhan Akhtar and Sivakarthikeyan were originally signed on. Nevertheless, Aamir later decided to reprise the lead role after feeling a renewed connection to the narrative during script readings. "Badi himmat karke, I spoke to Farhan and Sivakarthikeyan and apologised to them," he continued. "You have lived with the script for so long," Farhan remarked.
Sitaare Zameen Par, which was directed by R.S. Prasanna and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, will be released in theatres on June 20, 2025.
