Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person in connection with a deep-fake video of actor Aamir Khan in which he is allegedly seen promoting a political party.
According to a report in news agency PTI, the FIR was filed on Wednesday at the Khar police station under relevant Indian Penal Code sections, including 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating) and provisions of the Information Technology Act, the official said.
In the 27-second clip, which seems to have been edited using AI technology, Aamir Khan can be seen talking about staying away from rhetoric (jumla).
The actor had then issued a statement saying he has never endorsed any political party in his 35 year long career.
"We want to clarify that Mr Aamir Khan has never endorsed any political party throughout his 35-year career. He has dedicated his efforts to raising awareness through Election Commission public awareness campaigns for many past elections," the spokesperson said in a statement. "We are alarmed by the recent viral video alleging that Aamir Khan is promoting a particular political party. He would like to clarify that this is a fake video and totally untrue. He has reported the matter to various authorities related to this issue, including filing an FIR with the Cyber Crime Cell of the Mumbai Police," the statement read.
Talking about Aamir Khan's acting assignments, he is currently busy shooting for 'Sitaare Zameen Par.' He is working with RS Prasanna for this social comedy drama.
During a live Instagram session on his ex-wife Kiran Rao's page last month, Aamir Khan had said: "The same amount that 'Taare Zameen Par' has made you cry, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will make you laugh." Taare Zameen Par discussed the topic of Dyslexia and 'Sitaare..' focuses on Down Syndrome.
He also clarified then that they want to release the movie this Christmas this year. Aamir Khan has already started work on the movie 'Sitaare Zameen Par.' Genelia D'Souza will also be seen playing a pivotal role in the upcoming movie.
According to Aamir Khan's spokesman, Aamir has asked people to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise. Polling will be held in seven phases across India and it begins from April 19. The last phase is on June 1 and the results will be out on June 4.
