A key constituent of the National Democratic Alliance- Telugu Desam Party chief, N. Chandrababu Naidu, reiterated his support for the Bhartiya Janata Party. Naidu's assurance comes as a big relief for the saffron party as it requires help of allies as the NDA couldn't achieve an overwhelming majority.
The results and trends of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 announced on June 4 indicated that the NDA has won 293 seats, while the opposition INDIA bloc has bagged 232 seats.
The BJP alone could win 240 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. This is 63 seats short of the 303 seats that the saffron party could win in 2019. The Congress has won 99 seats, almost double the number it secured in 2019 general elections.
The TDP's assertion comes at a time when regional parties are being wooed by both NDA and INDIA blocs.
The Congress has already offered that it will give special category status to Andhra Pradesh, a key demand of the TDP, if the INDIA bloc comes to power. The TDP's declaration, far from a mere formality, carries the weight of its storied past in coalition politics when it had a bitter parting with the BJP just ahead of the 2019 elections despite being a long-time ally.
