Assam's Lok Sabha elections hold immense significance, as the state sends 14 parliamentarians to the Lower House, making it the highest from any northeastern state. With the recent announcement of the election schedule, the political atmosphere in the state has gained momentum, setting the stage for a gripping electoral showdown.

Historically, Assam was a stronghold of the Congress party, commanding political dominance for a significant period. However, since the 2014 elections, the party has been on a downward trajectory in the state, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to emerge as a formidable contender.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP secured victory in nine seats, consolidating its position with a 36.05% vote share. Despite facing stiff competition, the Congress managed to secure three seats with a vote share of 35.44%, underscoring its continued relevance in Assam's political landscape. The remaining seats were distributed among other parties, including the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Independent candidates. However, Congress has reaffirmed its commitment to the Northeast, through its recently held 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,' signaling its intent to reclaim lost ground in the upcoming elections.

2024’s Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be spanning three phases—on April 19, April 26, and May 7. Phase 1 on April 19 includes Autonomous District, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, and Lakhimpur. Phase 2 on April 26 covers Karimganj, Silchar, Mangaldoi, Nagaon, and Kaliabor. Phase 3 on May 7 includes Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, and Guwahati. Moreover, of the 14 parliamentary constituencies, two are reserved for ST candidates and one for SC candidates, while the rest are unreserved.

As Assam braces for the electoral spectacle, all eyes are on the voters, whose choices will determine the course of the state's political trajectory. With the fate of 14 parliamentary constituencies hanging in the balance, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections promise to be a watershed moment in Assam's democratic journey.
