In a move to address the controversy surrounding the NEET UG 2024 results, the National Testing Agency (NTA) informed the Supreme Court today that they are cancelling the grace marks awarded to students who faced time constraints during the exam.

These students will now have two choices: retake the exam entirely, or have their scores calculated without the previously awarded grace marks. The NTA will be contacting the affected students (1,563 in total) directly.

The re-test is scheduled for June 23, 2024, with results expected before counselling begins on July 1. The Supreme Court clarified that only those who experienced delays at their exam centers will be eligible for the re-test.

The grace marks were intended to compensate for perceived time loss during the exam. However, this decision came amidst allegations of widespread irregularities and unfair marking practices in the national medical entrance exam.

If a student chooses not to retake the exam, their original score, excluding the grace marks, will be considered their final result.

This year's NEET UG exam, conducted by the NTA on May 5, saw a record-breaking number of participants - approximately 24 lakh medical aspirants. While the results were initially scheduled for June 14, an earlier answer sheet evaluation led to a surprise release on June 4.

However, accusations of a question paper leak and the awarding of grace marks to over 1,500 students sparked protests and legal challenges across the country. Several High Courts, along with the Supreme Court, received lawsuits contesting the exam's legitimacy.
