A new era of rail travel in eastern India is imminent as the inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper train prepares for its maiden journey between Howrah and Guwahati later this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the service, which promises to cut the current fastest travel time by nearly three hours.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the semi-high-speed sleeper variant has completed all necessary trial runs and certification. The service will operate six days a week on the 966-kilometre route, transforming a journey that currently takes over 16 hours on the fastest train, the Saraighat Express, into an approximately 14-hour trip.
The minister outlined the train's role in the railways' future, stating it is designed for overnight journeys of around 1,500 kilometres and will eventually be introduced across all states. He emphasised that passenger comfort and safety were paramount in the design, which includes the indigenous Kavach train protection system, comprehensive CCTV surveillance and advanced suspension for noise reduction and ride quality.
The 16-coach train, developed by BEML using Integral Coach Factory (ICF) technology, has a design speed of 180 kmph. Its configuration includes 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier and one first-class AC coach, with a total passenger capacity of 823.
Passengers can expect a suite of modern amenities. These include ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, automatic exterior and interior doors, a dedicated disinfectant technology system for sanitation and a digital passenger information system. The timetable is structured for evening departures and morning arrivals, catering to long-distance overnight travel.
Adding a distinctive regional touch, the catering will feature local cuisines. Services originating from Guwahati will offer Assamese dishes, while those beginning from Kolkata will serve traditional Bengali food, aiming to blend enhanced connectivity with a culturally immersive experience.
The new service is set to benefit numerous districts across both states. In Assam, it will serve Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon. In West Bengal, it will improve connectivity for Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah districts.
The launch is viewed as a significant upgrade for regional integration, offering a tangible improvement in comfort, safety and efficiency for travellers on a key corridor connecting the northeast to the rest of the country. With its reduced journey time and premium features, the Howrah-Guwahati Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to set a new benchmark for overnight rail travel in eastern India.
