Bengaluru is at a rare point where cultural ambition, civic imagination, and innovation are beginning to move in sync. A not-for-profit platform, UnboxingBLR, is attempting to give that convergence a structure and scale.
Now entering its fourth year, UnboxingBLR positions itself as a collaborative platform that brings together citizens, creators, institutions, and government to spotlight Bengaluru as a progressive, multicultural, and constantly evolving city. Over the past few years, it has worked across formats that blend storytelling, data, and participation to redefine what it means to live in and belong to the city.
Its initiatives range from the Namma Bengaluru Challenge, which channels citizen-led climate and civic innovation, to BLR Hubba, one of the city’s largest public cultural festivals, and the WeAreCity Data Report, which captures how people experience and engage with Bengaluru.
As it scales up, UnboxingBLR has announced a clutch of large initiatives for the coming months. These include the third and most ambitious edition of BLR Hubba in January 2026 and India’s first Museum of Innovation, Startups and Technology, being developed as a public-private partnership with the Government of Karnataka’s Department of Electronics, IT/BT.
For Prashanth Prakash, chairman and co-founder of UnboxingBLR, the effort reflects a broader view of what makes a globally competitive city.
“Bengaluru has always been India’s innovation capital, but the city of the future must be more than a tech hub; it must be a sandbox for sustainable and inclusive growth,” Prakash said. “A globally competitive city isn’t just about GDP, funding and startups. It is also about liveability, preserving and nurturing green heritage, clean air, and vibrant public spaces that improve quality of life.”
Co-founder and CEO Malini Goyal said UnboxingBLR emerged from the pace and scale of Bengaluru’s transformation. “In the 21st century India, there are few other cities that have grown so explosively and changed so dramatically like Bengaluru,” she said, tracing its journey from a PSU and garden city to a global tech and startup hub. “For a reason we call it the city of new beginnings.”
