The victim, Mukesh Singh (26), was assaulted by four men on Monday after he objected to their behaviour. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan visited Mukesh’s home and felicitated him with a certificate and a memento, praising his courage.
“Despite being outnumbered and fully aware of the serious personal risk involved, Mukesh fearlessly confronted the offenders and stood firmly against their unlawful and indecent actions,” the DCP said.
The incident took place around 5 am when Mukesh was returning home after attending a wedding function in Rohini. Speaking to the media, Mukesh said he had stopped at a tea stall when he noticed the men making inappropriate remarks towards a woman.
“I saw them speaking badly to a girl. I only told them that it was wrong to talk to women like that and asked them to behave properly. After that, one of them attacked me from behind. I don’t remember clearly what happened next,” he said.
According to police, the attackers hit Mukesh with bricks, leaving him seriously injured. Mukesh suffered a fractured bone near his eye and required 10 stitches on his head. Doctors have told the family that his recovery could take several months, his brother, Rinku, was quoted by The Times of India as saying.
“His face is badly swollen and he has pain all over his body. We did not know the attackers,” Rinku added.
Mukesh lives with his wife and two children. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After recording statements from the women who were harassed, police added Section 79 of the BNS, which deals with acts or words intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
Police said all four accused have been arrested. They were identified as Vishal Rawat, Jatin (20), Sonu (25), and Vivek (20). Police said further investigation is underway.
