The results for one of the region’s most anticipated housing lotteries were declared on Tuesday, determining the fate of over 2.58 lakh applications for just 4,186 flats offered by the Pune Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).
The computerised draw, conducted at the Zilla Parishad’s Sharad Chandra Pawar Hall, marks the culmination of a sales process that saw unprecedented interest, underscoring the intense demand for affordable housing in Pune and surrounding districts.
The lottery encompassed flats across a range of MHADA projects within the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits, under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority and in the districts of Solapur, Kolhapur and Sangli. Of the total flats, 3,322 were part of a 20% comprehensive housing scheme, with 864 under a 15% social housing scheme.
The authority had initially advertised the lottery on September 11 last year, but the application window was extended twice due to technical issues and the enforcement of the election code of conduct for municipal polls.
The sheer scale of the competition highlights the housing crunch in the region. While a staggering 258,832 applications were submitted, only 215,965 applicants completed the process by paying the required deposit and were included in the final draw, a ratio of approximately 52 applicants for every available flat.
The public draw, conducted via a computerised system, was designed to ensure transparency in allocating the highly sought-after homes. For tens of thousands of hopefuls, the outcome represents a critical juncture in their pursuit of home ownership in a challenging real estate market.
