A 19-year-old biotechnology student from Tripura was allegedly assaulted and raped by her live-in partner following a dispute in Gurugram's Badshahpur area.
According to police, the incident came to light after the woman's mother called police on February 18, alleging that her daughter had been confined and severely assaulted by her live-in partner. Following the call, a police team was dispatched to the location and took the woman's live-in partner, also 19-year-old, in custody.
When officers reached the spot, they found the woman visibly injured and admitted her to a government hospital in Gurugram's Sector-10. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, including burns, doctors later referred her to AIIMS Delhi for advanced treatment.
According to the statement given by the woman to the police, she came in contact with the accused, identified as Shivam, a resident of Delhi, in September last year through an online dating app. Later, they both moved together in Gurugram.
According to the complaint, Shivam frequently questioned her character during the course of the relationship and assaulted her. Reports suggest that Shivam allegedly poured sanitiser on her private parts and set them on fire. Hospital authorities confirmed that the woman has multiple serious injuries all over body.
According to police, recently, an argument broke out between the two, which escalated to assault and rape. The woman called her mother and informed about the incident.
On February 1, police registered a case against Shivam under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
According to NDTV, investigators also said both families were aware of the relationship and there were talks regarding their wedding. "It came to light during interrogation that the families were discussing the couple's marriage. However, due to some disagreements, the accused allegedly assaulted the victim," said Gurgaon police spokesperson ASI Sandeep Turan.
"Relevant sections were added to the case based on the victim's complaint and the medical examination report. A detailed probe is being conducted," Turan said.
