The Lucknow Police on Monday arrested the parents of a resident doctor at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in connection with an alleged case of forcible religious conversion linked to marriage. The accused doctor, Rameezuddin, is still absconding, and police have doubled the reward for information leading to his arrest to Rs 50,000.
According to police, the case involves two women doctors who accused Rameezuddin and his family of pressuring them to convert their religion for marriage. One of the women is a resident doctor at Agra Medical College, while the other is a resident doctor at KGMU, The Indian Express reported.
Police said the parents, Salimuddin (70) and Khadija (60), were arrested after their alleged role came out during the investigation. They were living in a rented house in Lucknow’s Old City area. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishwajeet Srivastava said both victims recorded their statements before a magistrate, where they accused the parents of forcing religious conversion and, in one case, causing a miscarriage.
The police said Rameezuddin is facing serious charges, including sexual exploitation, religious conversion through deceit, and causing miscarriage without consent. Based on the statements and evidence collected so far, police believe the parents were actively involved in pressuring the women.
Search for absconding doctor
Meanwhile, police teams have been sent to several locations to trace Rameezuddin. A non-bailable warrant has already been issued against him. Police have also decided to move court to seek permission to attach his property if he continues to evade arrest.
Raids were conducted at his residence in Uttarakhand and his ancestral house in Pilibhit, but no clues about his whereabouts were found. During questioning, the arrested parents allegedly revealed the names of a Muslim cleric who performed a nikah and a witness. Police said their roles are being verified, and they may be named as accused if evidence is found.
University action and complaint details
KGMU had earlier suspended Rameezuddin after a complaint was filed by his colleague on December 23. Police booked him under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to sexual exploitation, criminal intimidation, forced miscarriage, and religious conversion.
Police said the KGMU complainant claimed she later came in contact with a woman who identified herself as Rameezuddin’s wife. That woman allegedly told her she had converted her religion to marry him earlier this year. The investigation is ongoing.
