In a first-of-its-kind move, the Chandigarh education department has announced a weekly uniform dress code for teachers working in government schools. The goal is to create a more professional and unified look among educators across the Union Territory, TOI reported.

As per the circular dated June 30, 2025, the dress code must be followed once a week, preferably on Mondays, and also during special school functions or celebrations.

The idea was first suggested in April by UT administrator and Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. After some discussions and feedback, the rule was made official through a circular. Initially, the proposed dress for women was off-white, but many teachers opposed the colour choice. The final decision now includes beige and blue colour combinations, with separate guidelines for male and female staff.

Director of School Education Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar told TOI, “There was some confusion about the colours, but it has now been sorted out. We are thankful for the cooperation of our teachers.”

However, some teachers and associations are unhappy with the rule. Sangeeta Rani, a lecturer, said that while one-day formal dressing is not a big problem, forcing specific colours is not right. Legal adviser Arvind Rana added that such colour-based rules shouldn’t be mandatory. Others said that if a uniform is compulsory, the government should also give teachers a uniform allowance to cover the cost.

"There are more important issues, like the regularisation of SSA teachers and the 2015 batch. That should come first. Uniforms are fine, but only after proper consultation and flexibility in choosing sober colours,” Ranbir Jhorar, president of the Joint Teachers’ Association, was quoted by TOI as saying.

Despite the pushback, the administration is moving forward. They believe the dress code will make schools look more organised and professional.

Official Guidelines:

* Male principals: White shirt and grey trousers

* Female principals: Beige saree or salwar kameez with a golden border

* Female teachers: White saree/salwar kameez with a golden or beige border, or off-white saree

* Male teachers: White shirt and navy blue trousers

The memo says the uniform will help build a professional look and better learning environment. School heads are responsible for ensuring all teachers follow the rule without delay. A sample colour chart was also shared to help with implementation.
