Delhi govt plans new Rs 500 crore flyover to ease traffic at Kashmiri Gate ISBT

The Delhi government is planning a new flyover at the congested Kashmiri Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) that will connect Nigambodh Ghat, near Margat Wale Baba, to Majnu Ka Tilla. Officials hope this project will turn the stretch from Rajghat to Majnu Ka Tilla into a largely red-light-free corridor, making travel faster and less stressful, NDTV reported.

Currently, traffic at the ISBT is chaotic, with vehicles coming from five different directions, often causing massive delays, especially during peak hours.

“The idea is to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion at ISBT. The proposed flyover will rise above the existing ISBT structure, cross the Metcalfe Road red light, and descend near Majnu Ka Tilla," a PWD official was quoted by NDTV as saying.

The PWD has been tasked with preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the flyover. According to the report, the project could cost around Rs 500 crore and may take approximately two years to complete once construction begins.

Meanwhile, a previous flyover project for the area has been temporarily put on hold.

Commuters along this busy corridor, which sees thousands of vehicles every day, are likely to benefit from significantly shorter travel times if the project materialises. The flyover is also expected to improve overall road safety by easing the congestion that frequently leads to accidents.

The stretch around ISBT has long been one of Delhi’s most challenging traffic spots. During the monsoon season, travel becomes even more frustrating as potholes and waterlogging worsen the jams. The proposed flyover, by eliminating some of the most problematic intersections and red lights, aims to offer smoother journeys between central and north Delhi.
