In a shocking act of revenge, a three-month pregnant woman was allegedly hacked to death by her ex-husband inside her Vanasthalipuram apartment in Hyderabad on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The accused, Devarakonda Mahesh, allegedly attacked 29-year-old Sunitha at her residence in Green City Colony around noon. Police said he barged into the fourth-floor flat, went straight to the room where she was working from home and locked it from inside.

Mahesh, a software professional, had earlier lived in Canada with Sunitha after their marriage in 2022. However, their relationship was strained from the beginning. Sunitha later filed for divorce in 2024 and returned to India. Earlier this year, she remarried and was living with her new family in Vanasthalipuram.

According to the police, Mahesh carried a bag containing two knives, a bottle of petrol and a chainsaw. Soon after entering the room, he allegedly got into a heated argument with Sunitha. “He stabbed her multiple times on various parts of her body, including her head,” TOI quoted T Mahesh, inspector, Vanasthalipuram, as saying.

Hearing her screams, family members rushed to the room and found Sunitha lying in a pool of blood. By then, the accused had locked himself inside the bathroom. At the time of the incident, Sunitha’s mother-in-law was on the terrace drying clothes, while her brother-in-law was in another room of the house.

Police said Sunitha had earlier filed a domestic violence complaint against Mahesh. Based on that case, a Look Out Circular (LOC) had been issued against him. Last year, when Mahesh returned to India following his mother’s death, he was intercepted at the airport due to the LOC and his passport was seized.

Deputy Commissioner of Police B Anuradha said Mahesh was upset that he could not travel back to Canada because of the pending case. He also allegedly held a grudge against Sunitha for remarrying. Police believe he planned the attack out of anger and a desire for revenge.

Officers had to break open the bathroom door to take Mahesh into custody. A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
