In a move to bolster city safety, the Bengaluru police have tied up with cab aggregators Ola and Uber to integrate emergency response technology into their ride-hailing apps, allowing riders to directly connect with the police helpline number 112.
Announcing the collaboration on Monday ahead of the New Year, the city police said the new response mechanism is expected to ensure faster and more effective action in emergency situations.
Seemant Kumar Singh, City Police Commissioner, Bengaluru, was quoted by the newspaper as saying, “As part of this initiative, emergency call facilities have been incorporated within the Uber and Ola mobile applications used for booking rides. Through this integration, riders and drivers seeking emergency assistance can directly share real-time location data, trip details, and contact information with Bengaluru City Police’s 112 emergency response infrastructure from within the Uber/Ola app itself.”
The real-time flow of critical information will give the police quicker access during emergencies, enabling faster response times and potentially life-saving intervention by first responders. The initiative marks a significant step in leveraging technology partnerships to enhance urban mobility safety and overall public security, he added.
Sooraj Nair, Head – Safety Operations, Uber India and South Asia, told IE that the partnership reflected the company’s continued investment in technology-led solutions and close collaboration with law enforcement to support the safety of riders and driver-partners.
“Safety is central to the Uber experience. By integrating our in-app emergency assistance directly with the Bangalore City Police, we’re enabling faster access to critical information when it matters most,” Nair was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
