Maruti Suzuki India today said its Gujarat in-plant railway siding has been registered as the world's first modal shift transportation project under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme of Verra.
The company said the project is expected to generate around 1.7 lakh carbon credits over a 10-year crediting period from FY24 to FY33 by shifting vehicle dispatches from road to rail. The emission reduction has been quantified under the AM0090 methodology prescribed under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Following independent verification, Verra will issue the carbon credits under its VCS programme.
The Gujarat in-plant railway siding has dispatched more than 6 lakh vehicles cumulatively since commencing operations in March 2023. The facility is aimed at reducing approximately 1.7 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions over the 10-year period by increasing the share of rail-based vehicle transportation.
Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the recognition marks a milestone in the company's sustainability journey and demonstrates the integration of operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.
The company said the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) and Climate Action (SDG 13).
Maruti Suzuki's first automobile in-plant railway siding at Hansalpur, Gujarat, was inaugurated in March 2024 under the Prime Minister's GatiShakti programme, while its Manesar facility in Haryana houses India's largest automobile in-plant railway siding, inaugurated in June 2025.
