Volkswagen has indicated that there are no immediate plans to reintroduce the Polo in the Indian market, with the company reiterating that any decision on the premium hatchback's return would depend on the strength of the business case.

Responding to a question from Moneycontrol on whether the carmaker is evaluating the reintroduction of the Polo, Volkswagen India Brand Director Nitin Kohli emphasised that although the model is among the company's most loved cars, financial viability remains the primary consideration for bringing any product to the market.

"The Polo has been one of our most loved cars. We have been asked a lot of times that when are we getting the Polo back. But it is a business case that matters. It has to be a financially viable business case to have a vehicle. We evaluate those situations to get a car to the Indian market. As of now, we are focussed on the locally-produced models like the Virtus (mid-size sedan) and the Taigun (mid-size SUV), and the locally-assembled Tayron R-Line (three-row premium SUV)," he said.

The Volkswagen Polo was launched in India in 2010 and went on to establish a strong presence in the premium hatchback segment over more than a decade. During its time in the market, it competed with models such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz and Toyota Glanza. However, it was discontinued in 2022.

Sales performance was among the factors that influenced the decision to axe the Polo. According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Volkswagen sold merely 11,816 units of the Polo in FY22. The low volumes, combined with evolving regulatory requirements and rising costs, weakened the business case for continuing the model.

Over the past few years, Volkswagen has shifted its India strategy towards newer, India-specific products under the Volkswagen Group's India 2.0 project. This includes models such as the Virtus and the Taigun, both based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, aimed at improving localisation and cost efficiency.

Looking ahead, Kohli outlined Volkswagen's product plans for 2026, signalling a steady rollout of new offerings. The company will have five product interventions this year, starting with the Tayron R-Line.

"We will have product interventions every quarter. We are starting with the Tayron R-Line, followed by the SUVs, sedan and hatchback. The models will cater to different customer needs and different customer segments," he observed.

Volkswagen has opened pre-bookings for the Tayron R-Line, the company's flagship SUV for the Indian market, for a token amount of Rs 51,000. Its price will be announced later this month.

The Tayron R-Line is being assembled locally in India at Volkswagen's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant in Maharashtra. It is available in a single, fully-loaded variant, offering premium features like IQ Lights with HD Matrix headlamps, 15-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital cockpit, 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with memory, ventilation, massage and lumbar support, panoramic sunroof and Level 2 ADAS.
