India’s first Tesla Centre is set to welcome public on November 26 at the Orchid Business Park in Gurugram, Haryana. The opening of this centre comes four months after the premium carmaker inaugurated an experience centre in Mumbai followed by an experience centre at the Aerocity in New Delhi.
India became the 50th global market for Tesla when it launched two variants of the Model Y starting at Rs 59.89 lakh. The cars are fully imported from the Shanghai manufacturing plant.
As per data shared by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), Tesla has sold 104 units in India in retail during September and October, going by the data uploaded on the government-controlled Vahan website.
The longer-range version of the Model Y, Tesla’s global best-seller, is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. With a 70% import duty, these are among the costliest Model Ys anywhere in the world, almost 30% dearer than their US equivalents.
Tesla’s debut in India coincided with turbulent market condition for the company elsewhere. Its sales across its major markets have dipped sharply, drawing scepticism from investors.
In the September quarter its worldwide sales grew by just 7% to 497,100 units as compared to 462,900 units clocked in the same period in the previous year. Sales in China, which is one of Tesla’s biggest markets, fell to a three-year low of 26,006 vehicles in October 2025 due to intensifying competition and softer demand.
Tesla in India is looking to shore up its volumes and retail presence under its new country head Sharad Agarwal who joined the brand in November. He was previously the chief business officer at Mahindra & Mahindra-led niche two-wheeler producing company Classic Legends. Between 2016 and 2024, Agarwal was the head of Lamborghini India. Prior to that he was associated with Audi India as head of sales.
German brands Mercedes-Benz and BMW lead the luxury electric vehicle market in India. Both the companies have around 80% share of the segment which witnessed sales of 460-480 units in October. BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo EC40, Kia EV6 and the BYD Sealion 7 are the competition for Tesla in India.
