Mid-range notebooks have been around since quite some time, now.  They aren’t exactly for high-performance usage, but do offer a slew of tangible benefits, the most important one being the relatively cheaper price range and the above average specifications. Acer has launched the new Aspire 5755, a mid-range notebook with decent specs. But, is the notebook worthy enough to warrant a buy? Read on to find out.

Design and Build Quality

Acer’s Aspire 5755 exudes a professional look with the glossy black exterior that is super imposed with an array of fine lines. Acer hasn’t experimented much with the looks of the laptop and that is more of a plus than a negative point. The interior has a Grey and Black colour combination and looks classy. The left side of the laptop consists of the charging port, LAN port, VGA port, HDMI port, USB slot, microphone and headphone jack and heatsink. The front consists of status LEDs and the multi-card reader slot. The DVD writer, USB 3.0 slot, Kensington lock and USB 2.0 slot are located to the right of the laptop.

The body of the laptop uses a fair bit of metal in its construction, but build quality is a slight disappointment, like the Aspire TimelineX, we reviewed earlier. The screen area is sturdy, but hinges are a little weak and the area above the DVD writer could have done with better reinforcement, as well.

Features

The Aspire 5755 comes with Intel’s Core i3-2310M processor operates at 2.1 GHz. The display is a 15.6-inch LED-backlit LCD screen and is based on Acer’s ‘CineCrystal’ technology. It comes with a 2GB DDR3 memory, 500GB hard disk and Intel’s integrated HD Graphics 3000 graphic card. As part of the features, the 5755 has Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a memory card reader and a 1.3 megapixel HD webcam capable of capturing HD video.

Acer’s Nplify Wi-Fi has been included, which allows users more bandwidth while transferring files via Wi-Fi. It also has a combo audio jack that allows mobile phone handsets to be connected and the laptop also comes preloaded with Dolby's Advanced Audio software that allows users to manually crank their audio settings.  It has a 6 cell Lithium-ion battery and weighs 2.6 kg. Besides USB 3.0, the features are pretty much as expected and nothing is out of the ordinary.

Performance

Keyboard feedback is great and the trackpad responsiveness is quick, too. The laptop has a wide tilt angle and viewing angles are pretty much the same as other laptops. Charging it up from zero battery takes around two hours. The speakers are quite loud and the 1366 x 768 screen plays HD video fairly well. Heat distribution was equal, per se, but there was minute heating to the left side of the laptop. However, we reckon that might be due to the presence of the heatsink underneath.

We performed a few synthetic tests where the laptop was pitted against the Lenovo G570 and below is a comparative chart of the same.

Battery Life

We got 2 hours 45 minutes of battery life at normal usage. Battery eater pro gave a total battery run time of 1 hour and 30 minutes in high performance mode, which is decent.

Verdict

The Acer Aspire 5755 retails at a price of Rs. 29,354 and comes pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Basic. Build quality and battery life was average, but it is quite cheap as compared to the Lenovo G570, which has similar specs. The 5755 will appeal to people wanting a no-nonsense, no-frills notebook. As far as design is concerned, the all-metal finish of the Lenovo Z570 could appeal more to some. However, on its own the Acer Aspire 5755 is a decent buy.
