The coal production from captive mines more or less measured up to the government's estimate, which stood at 52.9 million tonnes (MT) last fiscal. The output registered an increase of 34 percent amid a widening gap between demand and supply of coal.
Coal production from the 42 producing captive mines was at 39.48 million tonnes in 2013-14, an official said.
"Based on the review of the status of producing coal blocks which have not yet attained PRC (peak rated capacity) and the coal blocks which were likely to commence production in 2014-15 as well as the information/assurance given by the coal block allocatees, production during 2014-15 is 52.9 MT," said the minutes of a meeting held earlier.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary, Coal, to review the progress of production for the the current fiscal.
"The purpose of the meeting was to ascertain the likely coal production for the captive coal blocks during the year 2014-15...," it said.
India's coal imports in 2014-15 ticked up 33 percent to about 240 million tonnes.
