The Joint Parliamentary Committee probing the 2G scam is all set to wind up its probe. The panel, headed by Congress MP PC Chacko, posed some tough questions to CBI director Ranjit Sinha earlier on Tuesday on the alleged collusion between an agency lawyer and the accused Sanjay Chandra.

The panel now intends to draft the report and submit it to Parliament during the forthcoming Budget session even as the DMK remains keen that former communications and IT minister A Raja be allowed to depose before the panel, reports CNBC-TV18's economic policy editor Siddharth Zarabi and Elan Dutta.

"The CBI director has stated it was correct to some extent," said PC Chacko, chairman, JPC. The recording of a conversation that allegedly has AK Singh, a lawyer for the CBI, and Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra discussing the ongoing trial was received by the CBI almost 10 days ago.

The anonymous source gave it to a DIG of the investigating agency, who then acted upon it quickly. The JPC wants the agency to probe the person responsible for the clandestine recording and get to the bottom of the matter.

"The DIG got the tape from a source. We told them to find the source. From what transpired today, I understand it is not a government agency," PC Chacko told CNBC-TV18.

And as regards the exact nature and contents of the conversation and when it was recorded, Chacko said the details were not fully clear. "The recording was titled ‘Transcripts’ but it could be a dialogue or a discussion."

Chacko denied the BJP's charge that the Congress was in a hurry to wind up the proceedings of the JPC. "The Committee is not in a hurry to wind up."

And the question of whether he will accept the DMK's demand to summon Raja to the JPC, the panel chairman had this to say, "If one former minister is called, there are many in that line."

That then leaves only a slim possibility of Raja being summoned to the JPC, which in turn would mean that on May 10 - the last day of the Budget session- could see the JPC report being tabled in the House.
