India, China to spur global milk consumption: Tetra Pak

India and China will drive the global consumption of liquid diary products (LDP), which is set to rise by 30% to 350 billion litres by 2020, according to a report by packaging material maker Tetra Pak.

India and China will drive the global consumption of liquid diary products (LDP), which is set to rise by 30% to 350 billion litres by 2020, according to a report by packaging material maker Tetra Pak.


According to the fourth diary index report released, the dairy boom will be most pronounced in Asia, led by India and China, where increased prosperity and rapid growth of the middle class will spur a significant rise in consumption.


"Global demand for all forms of  LDP will grow from some 270 billion litres in 2010 to around 350 billion litres by 2020," according to Tetra Pak's Diary Index 2011.


LDP includes white milk and other liquid dairy products such as flavoured milk, drinking yoghurt, sweetened condensed milk, lactic acid drinks, baby and toddler milk.


In India, LDP consumption is likely to rise from around 55 billion litres in 2009 to around 60 billion litres in 2013.


"India is a big market. The consumption of milk is expected to rise and we see plenty of opportunities. We expect that going forward, it is likely to growth further," Tetra Pak
President and CEO Dennis Jonsson said.


The report also said developing markets are likely to account 60% of world output in 2020 compared to around a 40% contribution by advanced economies. Of which, India and China are likely to contribute more than 30% of the total global output by 2020.


"China and India are the powerhouses of the global economy and, while they remain poorer on a per capita basis than their counterparts in Western markets," it said.


Besides, the rising economic power of India and other Asian nations is expected to spur a shift from loose to packaged white milk consumption, it added.
