Nepal’s newly-appointed Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, has officially assumed office, as curfew restrictions ease across the country. This follows her appointment as interim Prime Minister after serving as the nation’s Chief Justice.
The office of Nepal’s Prime Minister will now operate from the new Home Ministry building.
Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel on Saturday urged all parties to cooperate in conducting fresh elections for the House of Representatives, scheduled for March 5.
This follows a week of violent protests that led to the resignation of K P Sharma Oli and the appointment of Sushila Karki as the country’s first woman prime minister.
China welcomed Sushila Karki’s appointment as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, reaffirming its support for Nepal’s sovereignty and political independence. The Chinese Foreign Ministry described the China-Nepal relationship as a “time-honoured friendship” and emphasised its commitment to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said, "China congratulates Madam Sushila Karki on becoming Prime Minister of Nepal's interim government."
