For Indian students, the dream of studying in the United States is facing fresh headwinds in 2025. Backed by US President Donald Trump, a series of new immigration measures are reshaping how international students access American universities.
From higher visa costs to tighter screening and proposed time-bound study periods, these policy shifts mark a significant departure from the earlier framework that allowed greater flexibility and affordability.
New visa fees to burn a deeper hole
At the core of the recent changes is a new US law called the "One Big Beautiful Bill," signed by Donald Trump on July 4, 2025. It introduces two mandatory charges for international students: a $250 Visa Integrity Fee (about Rs 21,463) and a $24 Form I-94 Fee (about Rs 2,060), which helps track travellers’ entries and exits. These charges apply to F, M, and J visa categories -- covering most Indian students planning to study in the US -- and are not optional.
Social media: A new frontier in visa scrutiny
In a controversial move, the US Embassy in India now requires student visa applicants to keep their social media profiles public during the application process.
This intensifies a rule that’s been in place since 2019, which already required applicants to submit their social media handles. What’s different now is that consular officials will actively review public content on platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook.
The goal, say US officials, is to detect red flags related to immigration intent or potential visa violations.
‘Duration of status’ may be scrapped
Currently, student visa holders (F and J) can remain in the US as long as they are enrolled full-time. This flexible concept, called "duration of status", has long been a comfort factor for international students.
But now, that’s under threat. Under a new proposal expected to be enforced by late 2025, student visas may come with fixed stay limits, typically 2 to 4 years, depending on the institution and program.
After this time, students would need to formally apply for an extension, adding uncertainty to those enrolled in longer or research-intensive programs.
Backlogs and delays: Early applications are crucial
US consulates in India are already dealing with record visa appointment volumes, leading to delays in interview slots and processing. Students are advised to apply early, keep documents updated and organised, and ensure full transparency, including about funding sources and long-term plans.
Emerging courses in demand
Amid all the immigration turbulence, US universities are updating their academic offerings to reflect global demand. Courses in artificial intelligence, climate technology, and sustainability are seeing increased emphasis, with greater institutional funding and opportunities.
For Indian students looking to stand out or align with US job market trends, these areas offer both relevance and post-study prospects.
