Amid political standoff, California governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday took a fresh but veiled 'no fear' dig at US President Donald Trump by sharing a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping interacting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit 2025.
Taking to X, Newsom posted a video of the informal interaction between the two leaders and wrote, "But have no fear, Trump is sending the Guard to Chicago."

This comes after Donald Trump, last week, hinted that he was planning to deploy National Guard personnel to Chicago, the country's third-largest city, and New York, inviting sharp criticism from Democrats.
The Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem told CBS News' 'Face the Nation' that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Chicago and other parts of the country would be bolstered, but declined to provide details. Noem said Trump would make a decision to deploy National Guard troops.
Meanwhile, Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday while referring to National Guard deployments to Washington, "We're going to make our cities very, very safe."
Before that, Newsom lashed out at Trump after the Republican leader controversially ordered nearly 5,000 troops to Los Angeles to quell protests against immigration enforcement raids.
The Department of Homeland Security said last week that it has made 5,000 immigration arrests in the Los Angeles area since launching a sustained crackdown in the nation’s second-largest metropolitan area on June 6.
Amid all this chatter, Newsom took a veiled dig at Trump and shared the three leaders' video at the SCO Summit in China, which comes against the backdrop of Donald Trump imposing 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India and an additional 25 per cent levies for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duties imposed on India to 50 per cent, among the highest in the world.
India and China are the biggest buyers of crude oil from Russia, the world's second-largest exporter. While Trump has imposed tariffs on New Delhi, he has spared Beijing, for now.
The SCO Summit was also held amid Trump urging both Russia and Ukraine to strike an agreement to end the war, which is now in its fourth year.
