Sikkim is set to revolutionise its tourism experience with the introduction of a cutting-edge digital permit system for high-altitude and border-adjacent destinations. In a major modernisation push, the state government will replace its traditional paper-based processes with a fully digital, QR-based platform, making travel smoother, faster, and more sustainable.
The initiative aims to streamline the issuance of Restricted Area Permits (RAP) and Protected Area Permits (PAP) required for accessing sensitive regions such as Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake, Lachen, Lachung, and Zuluk, which lie close to international borders.
A senior official confirmed on November 22, 2025, that the new platform will enable travellers to apply for permits online, eliminating long queues, extensive paperwork, and delays that have long frustrated visitors.
Digital transformation for tourismSikkim, known for its stunning Himalayan landscapes, pristine lakes, and rich cultural heritage, has long been a top destination for tourists. However, the manual permit process has often acted as a barrier, involving multiple departments and lengthy wait times.
The new system promises a seamless, paperless experience, allowing travellers to apply online from anywhere, upload documents digitally, make payments through the platform, and receive a QR-based permit that can be scanned at checkpoints. The QR scanning mechanism is expected to significantly speed up security checks and reduce congestion at entry points, making travel smoother and more efficient for visitors.
Enhanced security and sustainabilityAccording to Tourism Department Additional Chief Secretary CS Rao, the digital platform will synchronise data across key agencies such as tourism, police, transport, and the Army, ensuring real-time verification and improved oversight in sensitive zones.
“The new platform will synchronise data across agencies, such as tourism, police, transport and the Army, allowing real-time verification. Trial runs are currently being conducted with a limited group of operators. We expect a wider rollout soon,” Rao said.
Rao said the initiative is part of the state's effort to reduce delays, ease tourist movement, and maintain efficient oversight in sensitive zones.
The move supports Sikkim’s focus on promoting sustainable tourism, reducing paper usage, protecting fragile ecosystems, maintaining border security, and improving overall tourist movement throughout the region. By embracing technology, Sikkim aims to safeguard its unique natural and cultural heritage while enhancing visitor convenience.
User-friendly rolloutThe digital platform has been designed to be accessible and easy to use, ensuring travellers from all backgrounds can complete the process without difficulty. Once approved, QR permits will be valid at all authorised entry points, greatly simplifying travel logistics.
The system is currently in trial phase with select operators, with a full-scale launch expected soon.
