At a time when the cost of living is rising almost everywhere and everyday pleasures are becoming increasingly expensive, one South American city is standing out for all the right reasons. From dining out and entertainment to culture and nightlife, Medellín in Colombia has emerged as the world’s most affordable city to live in, according to the people who know it best — its residents.
The ranking comes from Time Out’s annual global city survey, which gathered insights from over 18,000 locals across more than 100 major cities worldwide. Respondents were asked to share their views on how affordable life feels in their city, particularly when it comes to everyday urban experiences such as eating at restaurants, grabbing a coffee, watching a movie, attending cultural events, enjoying live music, or going out for a drink.
By analysing the percentage of residents who rated these activities as “affordable” or “free,” Time Out identified the cities offering the best value for money in today’s challenging economic climate. Medellín topped the list, reinforcing its reputation as a place where quality of life, culture, and affordability still go hand in hand.

Why Medellín Feels So Affordable
Often called the “City of Eternal Spring,” Medellín enjoys mild, consistent weather year-round, with daytime temperatures rarely exceeding 26°C and nights staying comfortable around 15°C. This pleasant climate shapes daily life, encouraging outdoor cafés, buzzing nightlife, and lively street culture without the high price tags found in many global cities.
Set in a narrow Andean valley, Medellín punches well above its weight. High-rise neighbourhoods rise dramatically against jagged mountain peaks, while colourful street art, local markets, and an energetic cultural scene give the city its distinctive character. Once known mainly for its industrial roots, Medellín today blends commerce, creativity, and nightlife — especially on weekends, when clubs and music venues come alive.
What Does It Cost to Live in Medellín?
As of December 15, 2025, the estimated monthly cost of living in Medellín for a single person is 2,257,319.9 Colombian pesos (around Rs 53,095), excluding rent.
In comparison:
To maintain the same standard of living, you would need about Rs 2.57 lakh in Medellín to match what Rs 1.6 lakh offers in Delhi, assuming rented accommodation in both cities.
These figures are calculated using cost-of-living and rent indices that account for post-tax earnings.

Best Time to Visit Medellín
Thanks to its stable climate, Medellín is a year-round destination, but timing your visit can shape your experience.
High season: December to March
This is the driest period, with only 5–10 rainy days per month. December is particularly popular thanks to the city’s famous Alumbrados Navideños, when Medellín lights up with elaborate Christmas displays across parks, streets, and malls.
Shoulder season: June to August
This is festival season. The highlight is the globally renowned Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival), a vibrant celebration lasting over 10 days. Events include concerts, flower shows, and the iconic Desfile de Silleteros, where locals carry massive floral arrangements through the streets. Summer also brings the International Tango Festival, Poetry Festival, and Colombiamoda fashion event.
Rainy seasons: April to May and September to November
Expect rain on 15–20 days a month, usually in short afternoon bursts. These months are ideal for bargain hunters, with lower airfare and hotel prices often offsetting the occasional downpour.
Medellín for Digital Nomads and Long-Stay Travellers
Colombia offers flexible visa options that make Medellín especially attractive to digital nomads.
Tourist visa: Many nationalities can stay for 90 days, extendable up to 180 days per calendar year.
M visa (temporary resident): Valid for one year, commonly used by remote workers earning from foreign employers. It requires proof of minimum monthly income (around $700) and health insurance.
Digital nomad visa: Allows stays of up to two years and provides access to a Colombian ID, banking, and other local services.
Remote workers are allowed to work for foreign clients or companies but cannot take up local employment. Visa rules do require planning, as long-term stays may involve travel outside Colombia depending on the visa type.

Why Medellín Tops the List
With its affordable daily lifestyle, warm climate, cultural depth, and improving infrastructure, Medellín offers value that few global cities can currently match. Add in welcoming locals, dramatic mountain views, and a lively social scene, and it’s easy to see why residents rate their city as the most affordable place to live in the world.
In a global moment defined by rising costs, Medellín is proof that quality of life and affordability don’t always have to be opposites.
