YouTube, the world’s most popular video streaming platform, suffered a widespread outage that affected thousands of users across the globe. According to Downdetector, a platform that tracks service disruptions, users from the US, UK, and India faced significant issues accessing YouTube on both the website and mobile app.

What happened

The outage, which began earlier today, led to disruptions in video playback, with users reporting that videos were not loading or were taking an unusually long time to buffer. The issues were experienced on both the YouTube app and website. Downdetector registered over 5,000 complaints in the US alone, while more than 1,800 and 360 reports were logged in the UK and India, respectively.

Issues faced by users

In the US, 79% of affected users said they encountered issues with the YouTube website, 3% reported problems on the app, and 18% were unable to stream videos.

In the UK, the outage affected 78% of users accessing YouTube via web browsers, while 2% experienced issues with the app. Around 20% of users cited problems with video streaming.

India also saw significant disruption, with 68% of complaints related to the website, 5% to the app, and 27% to streaming-related issues.

Global impact

Downdetector’s outage map highlighted that the service disruption affected users throughout major regions in the US, UK, and India. The issue appeared to be consistent across mobile and desktop platforms, indicating a broader server-side problem rather than device-specific faults.

Current status

As of now, Google has not issued an official statement acknowledging the cause of the outage or when services will be fully restored. However, services appear to be working fine for most users now as access has been restored in several regions. Users are advised to refresh the app or site and check again.
