Huawei is making big changes to its computers. It is moving away from American technology and developing its own. For years, the Chinese tech company relied on Intel processors and Microsoft’s Windows operating system, just like most computer brands worldwide. The US government has placed strict restrictions on Huawei, stopping American companies like Intel and Microsoft from selling their technology to it. Because of this, Huawei can no longer use Intel processors or the Windows operating system in its computers, according to a report by South China Morning Post.
New chips, no Intel
Huawei has developed its own computer chips, like the Kirin X90, made by its chip unit HiSilicon. This chip recently got a security certification in China, making it more suitable for business and government use. Huawei’s Qingyun series laptops already run on its own Kirin 9000C and 9006C chips instead of Intel’s.
No more Windows
Huawei’s licence for Microsoft Windows is expiring, and it won’t be renewed. The company plans to launch HarmonyOS-powered laptops this year, just like it did with smartphones after losing access to Google’s Android.
Why is this happening
The US has banned companies like Intel and Qualcomm from selling chips to Huawei, forcing it to become self-reliant. The company is now building its own ecosystem to survive without American suppliers.
In 2024, Huawei sold more computers and increased its market share in China to 11%. However, it is still far behind Lenovo, which dominates the market with a 35% share.
The real challenge for Huawei is whether its new HarmonyOS-powered laptops can compete with Windows-based ones. Most people are used to Windows, and switching to a new system isn’t easy. If Huawei can make HarmonyOS a good alternative, it will show that the company can survive and grow without relying on American technology.
