WhatsApp has reportedly started testing a new feature that will make it easier for users to access the gallery. The feature, according to WABetaInfo’s report the instant messaging platform has started testing a new shortcut for the gallery app within the chat bar that will open the phone’s gallery app in a single touch.
WhatsApp’s new gallery shortcut button is currently being tested in the WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.24.23.11 with select beta users. This means it is not available to the public just yet and we expect WhatsApp to roll it out to more beta users gradually with a public rollout in the coming months.
What is this new gallery shortcut button in WhatsApp
According to the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, the new gallery shortcut button will be placed on the left side of the mic button. The button is likely to replace the current camera shortcut that triggers the viewfinder for users to quickly capture an image and share it along with access to a couple of photos that are already there in the gallery.
The new button is expected to open the gallery app providing faster access to photos and videos that are stored in the phone’s local storage. Currently, users are supposed to tap on the ‘+’ button and then select the type of content they want to share within the chat with someone. With this new shortcut, sharing photos and videos will become faster and easier.
That’s not it. The gallery button will serve a dual purpose, according to the report. Users can also long-press the gallery button to record a quick video message and share it with someone.
