French artificial intelligence (AI) company Mistral AI is in discussions to establish a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Bengaluru, as part of its plans to expand into India and deepen its global footprint, according to Karnataka’s Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil.

Patil announced the development after meeting Audrey Herblin Stoop, Vice President, Global Public Affairs & Communication, Mistral AI, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2026 in Davos.

The development is important as Mistral’s rivals have recently opened offices in India and Bengaluru.

While Anthropic is expanding its global operations to India, with plans to open an office in Bengaluru in early 2026, Generative AI pioneer OpenAI has also announced plans to open its first India office in New Delhi.

Mistral AI, founded in 2023, is a fast-growing French AI company recognised for developing high-performance, accessible and often open-source large language models (LLMs). The company currently has a strong presence in Europe and is expanding operations in Singapore and beyond.

Engineering teams first, research later

Meanwhile, Patil said talks were held on establishing the Bengaluru centre through a phased approach, starting with engineering teams and gradually expanding into advanced research and science capabilities.

He added that India’s deep AI talent pool was a key attraction for the company, and the delegation highlighted its interest in leveraging these capabilities as part of Mistral AI’s global expansion plans.

Bengaluru is the second-largest AI talent hub globally and houses over 50 percent of India’s AI/ML talent.

The delegation with Patil also added that Karnataka has three AI Centres of Excellence in partnership with IISc, NASSCOM, and other ecosystem partners, reinforcing the state’s attractiveness for AI and frontier technology investments.

Separately, Patil said Sify Technologies is set to inaugurate a new data centre facility in Karnataka shortly, while Bharti Enterprises has expressed interest in setting up a data centre in the State.
