The Nintendo Switch successor will come with backwards compatibility support, claims industry insider Nate the Hate in a post on Reddit. In a response to rumours about Nintendo’s next gaming console entering into mass production, Nate the Hate replied to Reddit user prongs17 that the Switch 2 “has backwards compatibility support.”
Nintendo is set to announce its next-generation console during the current fiscal year, company president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed in a press statement in May. We will get to know about the Nintendo Switch successor straight from the horse’s mouth by the end of March 2025, when the current fiscal year draws to a close.
Besides Nate the Hate, a similar claim about the Nintendo Switch successor getting backwards compatibility with both physical and digital game editions was made earlier this year by Switch controller and accessories maker Mobapad.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa had pre-notified the gaming public that there would be no announcements regarding Nintendo’s upcoming console during the Nintendo Direct 2024 event. The company has also kept mum about any features of the Switch successor.
For the fiscal year 2024, Nintendo announced that “year-on-year, sales increased by 4.4% to 1,671.8 billion yen, operating profit rose by 4.9% to 528.9 billion yen, ordinary profit rose by 13.2% to 680.4 billion yen, and profit attributable to owners of parent rose by 13.4% to 490.6 billion yen.”
As per Nintendo, unit sales of Nintendo Switch hardware and software both decreased year-on-year but the net sales jumped by 1.5% to 1,567.8 billion yen, “due in part to the continued depreciation of the yen in foreign exchange markets, the increase in proportion of hardware sales accounted for by Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, which has a higher unit price, and the growth in sales of add-on content not counted in software unit sales”.
