iPhone users, here’s how you can ask Siri to get answers from ChatGPT

Apple Intelligence system had made Siri into a more capable AI assistant — relatively speaking — thanks in part to deep integration with ChatGPT. With macOS Sequoia 15.2 and iOS 18.2 updates, Apple gave users the option to ask Siri questions and get responses directly from ChatGPT, either by voice or text.

The feature is part of Apple’s broader move to embed AI across its platforms, but what makes this update stand out is its ability to turn Siri into a front end for ChatGPT, with full support for typed prompts via the Type to Siri feature.

To get started, users must:

• Install Apple Intelligence on a supported device (Apple Silicon Mac or iPhone 15 Pro and newer).

• Enable Siri and Apple Intelligence via the System Settings (on Mac) or Settings (on iOS).

• Toggle on the ChatGPT Extension under the Extensions section.

• Optional: Turn on Confirm ChatGPT Requests, which prompts you before forwarding anything to ChatGPT.

Once everything is enabled, users can invoke Siri using voice or keyboard. On Mac, pressing either Command key twice brings up Type to Siri. On iOS, a double-tap in any text field does the same.

If Siri can’t answer a prompt on its own, it will ask:

“Do you want me to use ChatGPT to answer that?”

You’ll then be given the option to either Search the Web or Use ChatGPT.

• System-wide typing: Siri can now handle typed prompts with ChatGPT-level intelligence.

• No need for extra apps: Everything runs through Apple’s native interface.

• Cleaner handoff: Siri automatically forwards prompts to ChatGPT if needed.

• Privacy in mind: You control whether Siri checks with ChatGPT and when.

Don’t expect blazing speed as routing through Apple’s servers to ChatGPT adds some lag. And while Siri now sounds smarter, the heavy lifting is still done by OpenAI’s models. This hybrid setup is more about convenience and seamless UX than AI parity.

Still, this integration is a notable milestone: Apple’s voice assistant, often criticised for lagging behind, now gets a brain boost from one of the best in the AI game. And it’s available across the system without a single third-party app in sight.
