Former US president Donald Trump has revealed that Apple CEO Tim Cook gave him a call recently. In an interview with the PBD podcast, Trump said that Cook called him regarding the company’s ‘run-ins’ with the European Union. “Two hours ago, three hours ago, Cook called me,” Trump said. “He said the European Union has just fined us $15 billion... Then on top of that, they got fined by the European Union another $2 billion.”
Earlier this year in March, the European Union imposed a fine of approximately $2 billion on Apple, citing the company’s anticompetitive behaviour in limiting music streaming apps from informing users about more affordable subscription options available outside of the App Store. Furthermore, the EU succeeded in a separate case, compelling Apple to pay $14.4 billion in unpaid taxes
Trump further revealed his conversation with Cook. “He said something that was interesting,” Trump mentioned in the interview. “He said they’re using that to run their enterprise, meaning Europe is their enterprise. “I said, ‘That’s a lot... But Tim, I got to get elected first, but I’m not going to let them take advantage of our companies — that won’t, you know, be happening.’”
The former US president is in the midst of a presidential campaign and has mentioned that several big tech CEOs have reached out to him. He recently said that he had spoken to Google CEO Sundar Pichai about negative coverage on him. Trump also said that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had reached out to him a couple of times as well.
