If you’re someone who has ever blocked off your Google Calendar with a fake “meeting” just to get some quiet work done, Google finally has news you’ll appreciate. The company is rolling out a new feature that lets you reserve calendar time for an actual task — no pretend calls or made-up events required.
With this update, you can now click on any empty slot in Google Calendar and simply select “Task.” That brings up a neat little window where you can add the task you want to focus on, write a description, and even set how visible that block should be to others. You can also turn on Do Not Disturb, which might be the most satisfying part: you get to shut out notifications and protect your time without feeling like you're sneaking around your own schedule.
This solves a very real problem. Most of us juggle endless to-do lists while our calendars fill up with calls and deadlines. And when we genuinely need uninterrupted focus time, the only workaround was adding a “busy” block disguised as something else. Google seems to have recognised this modern-day struggle and is turning tasks into first-class citizens on your calendar.
What makes the update even smoother is that everything syncs with Google Tasks automatically. So the moment you block time for a task, it shows up on your to-do list and stays there until you’ve actually completed it. You’ll keep getting reminders too, which means it’s now harder to forget the things you promised yourself you’d finish.
The feature is rolling out to everyone — individual Google account users, Workspace customers, and Workspace Individual subscribers. There’s nothing admins need to enable. Google has already started rolling it out for Rapid Release domains as of November 6, 2025, though it may take more than 15 days for everyone to see it. Scheduled Release users will begin receiving it from December 1, with a gradual rollout over the next couple of weeks.
It may seem like a small update, but it makes Google Calendar feel more personal and practical. Instead of only managing other people’s time — meetings, calls, and commitments — the app now helps you protect your own. And for anyone trying to stay productive without burning out, that shift matters. Now, when you need an hour to breathe and actually get work done, you won’t have to invent a meeting to do it.
