Google to soon bring Android's file sharing tool to iPhone and Mac

Google’s Quick Share is a popular file transfer app that seamlessly transfers multiple files over a secure local network. Now, this file-sharing client might be available for Apple devices soon, so you can transfer files to and from iPhones and MacBooks.

Quick Share is one of the most popular file-sharing tools you can use to move files between Android devices. It is the equivalent of AirDrop, enabling files to be easily transferred between Android, Chromebooks, and Windows devices. The tool uses Bluetooth and a local Wi-Fi server to send files, and support for transmission over mobile data is likely in the pipeline.

However, a new report suggests Google may be working to bring Quick Share to iOS and macOS-based devices, potentially enabling file sharing on iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

Google’s Quick Share tipped to come for Apple devices

According to a new report by Android Authority via Android expert Mishaal Rahman, the source code of Nearby Connections available on GitHub indicates that Google might be working on a dedicated Quick Share app for iOS and macOS devices. This could potentially make cross-platform transfers between Android and Apple devices much simpler with native support.

A comment on Google’s Nearby GitHub page reveals how the app retrieves device names, specifically for iOS and macOS. It states, “For iOS and macOS, the device name is already localized and generally works well for Quick Share purposes… avoid using the non-localized account name and device type concatenation.” There's already an official Quick Share app for the Windows platform, so Google could roll out the same support for Apple devices as well.

However, the source code is still not publicly available. Therefore, we might have to wait for a few weeks or months, before we see this new file-sharing tool on Apple devices.
